Extra investment in drug treatment, education and harm reduction could benefit NZ economically by $450 million a year, according to a new report.

Commissioned by NZ Needle Exchange Programme (NZNEP), NZ Drug Foundation and Matua Raki, the report estimates there would be a net social benefit of $34m to $83m from replacing the Misuse of Drugs Act with new health-based drug law. Needle Exchange Programme executive director Kathyrn Leafe says harm reduction needed to be part of any treatment model.
